Outlook + MCP

Connect Outlook to Claude via MCP — full email access

Claude has a native Outlook connector, but it is limited to reading and drafts. MailMCP via MCP unlocks full access: real sending, scheduling, folder management, and search across your entire Outlook mailbox.

Native Outlook connector vs MailMCP via MCP

Claude and ChatGPT offer native Outlook integration, but it comes with significant limitations. Here is a side-by-side comparison of what you can do with the native connector versus MailMCP via MCP.

Feature Native connector MailMCP via MCP
Read emails Yes Yes
Search emails Limited Full IMAP search
Create drafts Yes Yes
Send emails directly No Yes
Schedule sending No Yes
Move emails to folders No Yes
Flag / mark read No Yes
Create folders No Yes

The native connector is read-mostly. MailMCP gives your AI full control over your Outlook mailbox.

Outlook IMAP/SMTP configuration for MailMCP

Here are the exact settings to connect your Outlook / Microsoft 365 email. Note the SMTP port difference — Outlook uses 587 with STARTTLS.

IN IMAP — Incoming mail

Server
outlook.office365.com
Port
993
Security
SSL/TLS
Username
your full email

OUT SMTP — Outgoing mail

Server
smtp.office365.com
Port
587
Security
STARTTLS
Username
your full email

Important: Outlook SMTP uses port 587 with STARTTLS, not port 465 with SSL/TLS like most other providers. MailMCP handles this automatically when you select Outlook as your provider.

Why there is no password to enter

Microsoft has switched off password sign-in for IMAP and SMTP. Here is how Outlook connects to MailMCP instead.

Passwords and App Passwords no longer work

Microsoft has turned off password sign-in (basic authentication) for IMAP and SMTP on Outlook.com, Hotmail, Live and Microsoft 365. Whatever you type — your usual password or a Microsoft App Password — the connection is refused. This is why older tutorials no longer work.

How to connect: Sign in with Microsoft

In MailMCP, click "Add a mailbox", type your Outlook address and click "Sign in with Microsoft". You sign in on Microsoft's own page (with your MFA if it is on) and approve access. MailMCP receives a revocable access, never your password — you can withdraw it at any time from your Microsoft account.

Organization-managed accounts

If your Microsoft 365 account is managed by your organization (company or school), your IT administrator may need to approve MailMCP once in Microsoft Entra, and to keep IMAP and authenticated SMTP enabled for your mailbox. If the sign-in shows "Need admin approval", forward that screen to your administrator.

What your AI can do with your Outlook email via MCP

Once connected via MailMCP, your AI gets full access to 15 email tools. Everything the native connector cannot do — and more.

Read and search

List emails, read full content, search by sender, subject or keyword. Full IMAP search across your entire Outlook mailbox — not limited to recent emails.

Send and reply

Draft and send emails directly from your Outlook address. Reply to conversations, add CC/BCC, schedule sending for later. Real sending — not just drafts like the native connector.

Organize and manage

Move emails between folders, flag important messages, mark as read/unread, create new folders. Full mailbox management that the native Outlook connector does not offer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between The native Outlook connector in Claude and MailMCP?
The native Outlook connector in Claude lets you read emails and create drafts, but it cannot send emails directly, schedule sending, or manage folders. MailMCP via MCP gives full access: read, send, reply, schedule, move, flag, create folders — 15 tools total. It is the difference between read-only and full control.
What are the IMAP/SMTP settings for Outlook / Microsoft 365?
Outlook uses outlook.office365.com for IMAP (port 993, SSL/TLS) and smtp.office365.com for SMTP (port 587, STARTTLS). Note that Outlook SMTP uses port 587 with STARTTLS, not 465 with SSL/TLS like most other providers. Your username is your full email address.
Do I need a password or an App Password to use MailMCP with Outlook?
No. Microsoft has switched off password sign-in for IMAP and SMTP: neither your usual password nor an App Password works anymore. In MailMCP, type your Outlook address and click "Sign in with Microsoft": you approve access on Microsoft's own page, and MailMCP never sees your password. MFA is fully supported, since Microsoft handles the sign-in.
Can I use MailMCP with personal Outlook.com and Hotmail accounts?
Yes. MailMCP works with all Microsoft email accounts: Outlook.com, Hotmail.com, Live.com, and Microsoft 365 business accounts. The IMAP/SMTP settings are the same for all. Personal accounts may require enabling IMAP access in Outlook.com settings under Mail > Sync email > POP and IMAP.

Go beyond Outlook native AI limits

Free account, 3-minute setup. Connect your Outlook mailbox to Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP-compatible AI. Full email access — not just reading and drafts.
